If you are interested in 3D printing and follow news on the subject, you will hear almost daily about advances in the sophistication and capabilities of hobby and semi-professional 3D printers. New 3D printing techniques and technologies, not to mention new 3D printing products, are being developed constantly.

However, one of the most underrated advances in the consumer 3D printing market is the proliferation of 3D model repositories. These sites and many others are fantastic for downloading and printing models, as long as the models provided suit your needs. But what if you need to or want to edit the models? This seems like it should be easy; however, the major problem you will encounter is that the vast majority of 3D models online are provided in STL format.

Convert a Simple STL into a Body in Fusion 360

If you want to, for example, download a model from Thingiverse and edit it, you will need a way to convert the STL file into a form that the tools provided by your software can understand. An STL file consists of a bunch of triangular surfaces joined together to create an object. An STL file is simply a complex surface consisting of two-dimensional triangles.

In this STL file thingyou can see that the object is made from many triangular surfaces. This process becomes more and more difficult as the number of triangles in the STL increases. With complex STL files, if you follow the steps below, you will get an error in Fusion that will essentially tell you that the STL file is too complex to convert to a body in any reasonable amount of time.

You may get this error at the end of the process below if the STL file you are using is too complex. In this case, there is a different guide for converting complex STL fies. For the purposes of this guide, a simple STL file is one that does not trigger such errors.

A different technique is required to convert complex STL files into a body. The more advanced conversion process is described in a different post.

As long as your STL file is not too complex, the procedure below will allow you to convert the STL into a body that can be edited in Fusion using your normal editing tools in the Model workspace. First of all, the STL file will need to be imported into Fusion Otherwise, in the upper-left corner of the Fusion window, click the Upload button. Then, click the Select files button and navigate to the STL you wish to import. After selecting the STL file you want to convert, click the Upload button, this time the one in the lower-right corner of the file upload window.

Then, the STL file you selected will be imported into Fusion The process can take a few minutes. Click the Upload button after selecting your STL file. Normally Fusion tracks all the edits you make to a model in a timeline at the bottom of the window.

I created the Flower of Life aka Circle of Life using a simple circle pattern generator. These were individually applied to the sides of a disc. The disc was then milled out of aluminum on a Haas vertical mill. For the base, I cut and shaped a piece of walnut. It's almost done as it needs finishing. I cut a steel rod to use for mounting the disk atop the wood base.

This required holes to be drilled in the base and the disc. Final assembly was simply inserting the rod into the wood base and then the disc atop that. Image 2 Surface. I've created a script for Fusion that can be used to import an image and convert it to a mesh, sketch points, or sketch lines. The images of the Moon are of a mesh and t-spline. The mesh was created from a heightmap image of the moon surface. Then it was converted to a t-spline. The second example used a color spectral analysis image.

Penny Image 2 Surface. This is a model of a penny I created using my Image2Surface script. With the script I was able to import a heightmap image of a penny and generate a mesh. As I wanted to mill the model I needed to convert the mesh to a t-spline surface.Since I first built my 3D printer, I've seen the possibilities for modifying and adding to it in order to increase its capabilities.

For starters, I've added a pen plotter, which is mostly a novelty since anything a pen can draw could also be printed on a traditional computer printer.

However, my thought is that with this up and running, the methods used can be easily extended to allow for laser engraving, CNC milling, PCB prototyping, and more. The overall goal of this Instructable is to take a picture from the internet and convert it into gcode that is usable by your printer.

There are many instructions online to do so, however all of the ones I found used Inkscape with the J Tech Photonics Laser Tool Plug-In to create gcode for tracing just the outline of your object. Knowing that I would want solid infill for future engravings and such, I found a way to use Fusion to turn the whole image into a 1 layer thick 3D object so that I can slice it and export the gcode just like if I were 3D printing.

First, download Inkscape from their website. You will also need XQuartz if running on Mac, there are instructions on Inkscape's website and many other websites on the internet on how to perform installation successfully for your given operating system.

Open the image and import with the default settings. It will be converted later. Change the pallet units to mm or inches if you prefer and select the lock icon to lock the aspect ratio.

Then scale the image to an appropriate size for your print bed. In the Trace Bitmap window, select Live Preview. Then modify the Brightness cutoff threshold value to get the desired appearance of your image. Click Apply to insert this vector image into your document.

The vector image and the bitmap image will now be overlaid on each other. Close the Trace Bitmap dialogue and delete the original bitmap image you will need to drag one image out of the way first, since they will be exactly on top of one another. Note you may need to delete the original file extension that was first imported with this file name.

Download Autodesk's Fusion if you don't already have it. It is free to students, hobbyists, and more and is available on their website as well as on the Mac App store. Open a new Fusion document and click Sketch to start a new sketch. Then choose the XY plane from the origin representation to start your sketch on. Enter an extrusion height, I used 0.

You can choose any height you like, but you may need to make modifications in your slicing software later to get it to plot properly. Click OK on the follow up dialogue and choose your save location. Occasionally when importing an SVG especially with complex geometry such as this one a loop that is supposed to be closed may not actually close itself.

This will become apparent when you try to extrude your sketch and it either extrudes areas it shouldn't or won't extrude anything at all if the profile is fully open to the outside. The opening in your sketch may also be very hard to find, often less than a micrometer of a gap.

You will need to restart Fusion to use it. Zoom in to the opening and simply draw a line to close the loop. Convert Images to 3D Models (Line-Art to Path Tutorial)

Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. Fusion is pretty much all I use nowadays in terms of 3D software. That's not exactly the case, and here's why:. I've been 3D modeling for over 13 years, and I can tell you honestly that this program is perfect for the kind of work I do: furniture, toys, machines, household products, etc.

It makes digital fabrication a breeze, especially laser cutting. There are a number of other programs out there that could be used to produce the same results, and if you're comfortable with something else especially if you've already paid for itthere's no reason why you shouldn't stick with it.

But if you haven't spent any money or invested time in another program, believe me when I say you won't be sorry you went with Fusion Fusion has a great Youtube channel with lots of helpful videos. If you're the type of person who likes to learn software by going through every function it can perform, this channel is a good place to start.

The overview here should get you pretty well oriented to the interface and give you an idea of how the program works. It's so much easier than using a trackpad. The navigation bar is positioned at the bottom of the canvas. It provides access to navigation commands.

Convert a Simple STL into a Body in Fusion 360

The menus on the right end control Display Settings and Layout Grid options. Set of commands that enables you to specify desired visual style, visibility of objects, or camera settings, for example. Viewports are windows that display your design. You can show up to four viewports in the canvas at once.

Displaying multiple viewports allows you to work in one view and see the changes from other camera positions. Use the ViewCube to rotate the camera. Drag the ViewCube to perform a free orbit. Click faces and corners of the cube to access standard orthographic and isometric views.

Trackpad: If you have a Mac with a touchpad or an Apple Magic Mouse, you can use multi-touch gestures to navigate the view. There are dozens of scripts that allow you to do some pretty awesome things. The script is very simple. All it does is translate the value level of lightness or darkness of a bitmap image to the height of a point on a mesh surface. The white parts of an image will be the highest points, and the black parts will be the lowest points. This script will work with any photo, but I find it's best to use grayscale images because it's easier to predict what it will look like in 3D.

First, download the Zip file attached belo and unzip it in a location of your choice. I would advise keeping it some place other than the Downloads folder, or any other folder that is regularly cleaned out. I select Image2Surface from the list and click Run. When you've selected your image, click OK and you'll get the Image2Surface script dialog. Here's a breakdown of the settings and what they mean. There's a lot of technical jargon that we won't get into here, but I find that a good place to start learning about this kind of thing is to just play around with the settings and see what happens.

The settings shown in the screenshot below seem to yield the best results. You may want to invert your image depending on what it is. When your settings are dialed in, click OKand the script will make the surface.Creating sketches with 2-dimensional geometry is a critical step in any CAD program.

Select Finish Sketch to exit out of the mode. The first step to starting a sketch is selecting the 2D plane or a face to draw the sketch on. In order to start a sketch on a face, there must already be existing 3D geometry, which I will demonstrate in just a bit. The plane will dictate the way your 3D model sits… along with the direction any 3D features can be created.

The 3D features would extend Extends a curve to the nearest intersecting curve or boundary geometry. Pause the cursor over the curve to preview the portion to be extended. Select the curve to extend it. Select the profile or planar face then specify the distance to extrude. If I select the sketch profile, I can extrude it, creating a 3-Dimensional object. Again, take notice that this automatically closed us out of the sketch environment. Select a plane, draw a rectangle then specify the height of the box.

Any time you use a sketch to create 3-Dimensional geometry, the sketch will automatically be turned off. Use the browser to make changes to objects and control visibility of objects. I can click the lightbulb icon to toggle the sketch on and off as necessary. To rename a sketch simply double-click on the sketch in the Fusion Browser…and type out a new name that will help you remember what the sketch was used for. Creating a new sketch can also be done in the reverse order. The last way to create a new sketch is to use construction planes.

Appearances override the color assigned from the physical material. Appearances do not affect engineering properties. Drag the appearance from the dialog to the body, component, or face. As you can imagine, using a combination of these ways to create new 2-dimensional sketches can really enhance and speed up your 3D modeling workflow.
